Jason Sumich Rides & Attractions Leave a Comment

In this article we will break down the top 10 thrill rides in Disney World. We will use the following criteria:

  • Thrill: How intense is the ride? Does it go 0-60, backwards, or straight down faster than the speed of gravity?
  • Theming: Does the ride embody the world class “Disney touch”
  • Uniqueness: Does the ride bring something to the table that other rides don’t?

10. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Score: 21.5/30

  • Thrill: 6/10
  • Theming: 8/10
  • Uniqueness: 7.5/10

A relatively tame, short ride, this attraction stands out for its fantastic dark ride scene of the Seven Dwarfs marching to the classic Disney song “Heigh Ho”.

9. Test Track

Score 21.5/30

  • Thrill: 8/10
  • Theming: 6/10
  • Uniqueness: 7.5/10

Hitting 65 mph is one of the best thrills one can experience in WDW. The new theming is not as impressive as the original ride, but the ability to design a car and compete against members of your party gives it a distinct aspect.

8. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

 Score 22/30

  • Thrill: 7.5/10
  • Theming: 7.5/10
  • Uniqueness: 7/10

Big Thunder Mountain is one of the most well-balanced rides in all of Walt Disney World. It brings a unique blend of unpredictable turns, drops, and well executed mine-shaft theming.

7. Rock n Roller Coaster

Score 23.5/30

  • Thrill: 9.5/10
  • Theming: 7/10
  • Uniqueness: 7/10

There’s nothing quite like going from 0-60 in under three seconds. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster packs in the thrills and provides an imaginative setting of a Hollywood record company.

6. Slinky Dog Dash

Score 23.5/30

Guests at DisneyÕs Hollywood Studios can go to infinity and beyond in Toy Story Land. The immersive 11-acre land takes guests into the adventurous outdoors of Andy’s backyard, where they will feel like they are the size of Green Army Men surrounded by other toys. Guests can whoosh along on the family-friendly roller coaster, Slinky Dog Dash, take a spin aboard Alien Swirling Saucers and try for the high score on Toy Story Mania! (Matt Stroshane, photographer)
  • Thrill: 7/10
  • Theming: 8.5/10
  • Uniqueness: 8/10

Slinky Dog Dash is in many ways an upgraded version of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. It improves upon its predecessor with two launches and a longer run time all while maintaining the exquisite theming that permeates through Toy Story Land.

5. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Score 25.5/30

  • Thrill: 7/10
  • Theming: 9/10
  • Uniqueness: 9.5/10

Rise of the Resistance is a technical marvel, and few attractions anywhere place you in an immersive world as well as this ride does.

4. Avatar: Flight of Passage

Score 25.5/30

  • Thrill: 7.5/10
  • Theming: 8/10
  • Uniqueness: 10/10

The pre-show may be cheesy, but Flight of Passage is an experience. Few things in WDW top the thrill of riding on the back of a banshee for the first time.

3. Expedition Everest

Score 26/30

  • Thrill: 8.5/10
  • Theming: 9/10
  • Uniqueness: 8.5/10

Expedition Everest is the perfect combination of white knuckle thrill and immersive story-telling. From the Yeti Museum cue to the up close encounter with the Yeti, this attraction finds itself near the top of all Disney thrill rides.

2. Tower of Terror

Score 27/30

  • Thrill: 8/10
  • Theming: 10/10
  • Uniqueness: 9/10

This ride is oozing with atmosphere. It might be the Imagineers’ best work from a theming perspective. In addition the ride is an extreme thrill, as it drops faster than the speed of gravity.

1. Splash Mountain

Score 27.5/30

  • Thrill: 7.5/10
  • Theming: 10/10
  • Uniqueness: 9.5/10

Splash Mountain is the quintessential Disney thrill ride. It immerses you in a story, provides a classic Disney soundtrack, and that five story plunge into the Briar Patch still gets your heart racing no matter how many times you ride it. Ultimately the great soundtrack gives it the slightest edge over Tower of Terror.
